Zip Code Resources

We are still updating the content of our zip code resources section. You are welcome to use what is currently available.

The resources on this page are designed primarily to assist truckload carriers in identifying the origin and destination points in their rate data with zip codes. Please read the Legal Stuff before using any of the resources at www.thelogisticsdepartment.com.

Overview

Truckload rates that are based on origins and destinations identified with state abbreviations are difficult to automate because of the need to split the larger states into smaller pieces. This works fine on paper but defies automation.

In working with our customers' truckload carriers to automate their rates for use with our products that compute shipping charges, we found that the three digit zip works very well in adapting the tariffs for automation. The three digit zip code provides the flexibility required by carriers to section the large states and it provides us with the basis we need to automate the tariff.

If this sounds like a lot of work, it's really easier than it sounds. As an example, our truckload rate format is based upon low and high zip code ranges for the origin and destination points. So a rate record for a movement from California to New York that would traditionally be identified as something like:

Origin       Dest       Flat Rate

  CA          NY         2500.00

The three digit zip code equivalent using zip code ranges would be:

Origin       Dest       Flat Rate

900-961  100-149     2500.00

Zip Code Reports

To assist you in adapting your rates to the Pathfinder format, we've provided three different three digit zip code reports that we think you'll find very useful.

Zip Code Boundary Maps

This section is under construction (05/22/2004)

The three digit zip code boundary maps below graphically depict the regions represented by each three digit zip code within a state. We think you'll find these maps very useful in helping you determine how to split a state.

After using our tools, many carriers we've worked with have divided large states (typically sectioned into north and south regions) into even smaller regions (four or five). As an example, by dividing the state of Florida into five regions instead of two gives you the flexibility to better align your rates to your costs. In the end, that benefits both you and your customers.
